Interesting.

My people had a wonderful tolerance for diverse sexual orientation and expression.

quote:The Ojibwa viewed the world in two genders: animate and inanimate, rather than male and female. On the animate gender spectrum, a person could serve the society as a male-role or a female-role. John Tanner and anthropologist Hermann Baumann have documented Ojibwa peoples not falling into the European ideas of gender and its gender-roles, called egwakwe (or Anglicised to "agokwa"). Though these egwakweg may contribute to their community in whatever fashion that bring out their best character, sometimes these documented male-to-female transsexual Midew among the Ojibwa were more readily noticed by the non-Anishinaabe documenters.[5] A well-known egwakwe warrior and guide in Minnesota history was Ozaawindib.

I wonder if some of my tolerance is genetic?

Too bad the white men had to come here and trash the place.

I Like this quote :“To hear many religious people talk, one would think God created the torso, head, legs and arms but the devil slapped on the genitals.”
Don Schrader (the naked man of Albuquerque)

I am abundantly proud, that my first post on this board, is under the esteemed "The Real Logos".

Hooray!

Hooray, indeed!!!!!

I wonder if there are other cultures with such a tolerant view of sexual orientation.

I've never heard of this before.....happened on it by sheer accident.

I knew this years ago after watching Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man

Well, in that admittedly great movie there was also a "contrary" (a person who does everything backwards) which I'm not at all certain is something that existed in real life......so the openly gay character was open to question as to being totally made up.

Besides, those were Sioux. Totally separate tribe. Are you saying that the two-spirit person was recognized and respected among the Sioux as well?
